I have a 3130 (r4's , 420 70 24 ) I've got a set of double ring chains for it . The problem is they rub the interior of the fender . Can I widen the tire spacing ? Looking at the rims It looks like I can unbolt the 4 bolts on the perimeter of the rim and just reverse them .Besides , it'd be nice to have the air stems on the outside of the rim :) But I'm not sure about it . Any help will be appreciated ! Thanks , John

My 3130 Operator's Manual shows 3 possible rear tread widths for the rear 420/70-24 R4 tires. They are 52.2, 53.5, and 57.7 inches, measured center to center.

The instructions are:
1) Remove the wheel rim and / or disk mounting bolts.
2) Change the position of the rim and / or disk (right and left) to the desired position, and tighten the bolts.
The Manual has an illustration to clarify the positions.

The bolts should be tightened to 160 ft-lb, drive 200 yards/meters and re-tighten.

On my 3130 with R1's I swapped the rims left to right to keep the directional tread properly oriented.
Jack and securely block the rear axle. Keep the space between tire and floor to a minmium, allowing just enough room to get a pry under to aid in remounting. If your tires are liquid loaded they could be a real handful, and extra hands or a mobile tire service might be an option.

Front tread width on four wheel drive models is not adjustable.

The extra stability at maximum width is amazing.

Blizzard Thanks ! I don't know why but the manual never occured to me ! Doh ! Even has pictures :)
Man whoever torqued those puppies was either strong or just real mad that day ! Looks like a job for the tire company .
I don't have an impact wrench . And me on the end of a 3/4" breaker bar just won't get it done . John ....

Yeah, the 160 ft-lbs can be difficult to get, as access is limited. The trouble with impact wrenches is that the operator can seriously over-tighten the bolt. I'm lucky to have some tools. Socket extensions are a big help, 2X4's of various lengths can support the outboard end so the socket will stay on the nut/bolt better. While it's still Firmly blocked up you can turn the wheel to get the bolt in the best position, set the parking brake to keep it there. A piece of pipe to extend the breaker bar will make it easy, but a 1/2" or 3/4" drive torque wrench is an excellent $30 to $100+ investment. You'll need one for the loader frame anyway. My import 1/2" air gun will not do 150 ft-lb, though adverterised to do 250! Quality (Expensive) ones will do 500ft-lb or more. Be careful you don't break a bolt.
After you change the rims around, be sure to check them often the first 50 hours or so, as the paint on the 'new' mating surfaces will wear in. Also a can of touch-up spray may be needed at the old areas. I believe the nuts/bolts are 23MM but a 15/16 6-point socket works for me too.

Thanks for the tips ! A 3ft length of pipe did the trick . Also having a wife that doesn't mind getting her hands dirty is a BIG Plus ! My next tool purchase is going to be a good torque wrench .
The first set of chains was a bit of a pain to fit . Had to take out two sets of cross links . The second set took about 10 minutes . The extra traction and control are everything I'd hoped for . Using the rear blade on ice would tend to get the tractor side ways without the chains .
I tried the same section in two wheel drive with the chains and I plowed straight as an arrow . Again, Thanks for the help . John ....

Happy to hear your upgrade went smoothly and you are happy with the result. Do you notice the tractor is more stable with the wider rear tread?

First, the reason it went as well as it did was your help .
I'd most likely still be trying to figure out what to do if it wasn't for your guidance !!
As far as stability.... The only side hilling I've done is on my drive way . All I can say is I'm not side slipping anymore . Don't know if it's the chains or spacing the wheels out . But it worked ! I'll know more when I put on the Hog this spring . But I'm sure widening the stance of the tractor can only improve stability .

John,
Just trying to repay for all the info I've received from the members here. Glad I was helpful, but you and your 'helper' are the ones to be commended.
Please let us all know your experiences/opinions, I almost chose the 'Double-Ring' style over 'Duo-Grip V-Bar', but thought the latter would be better with R1's.
This really is a GOOD group!

You're right . this is a really good group ! I spent a lot of time lurking . Then I had a conversation with Dk35 Vince about the 19 odd dollar premium fee . He asked what I spend on Mag subscriptions . Brought me back to reality REAL QUICK :) If I had to pay someone to dish the rims and fit the chains it would have cost a lot more than premium member Fee !!! I figure I can get 4-5 years more out of the money I saved on this thread alone . Hey ! A couple more threds like this and I'll save enough for that box blade I want :)
Back to chains .. I bought the dual rings as a compromise .
While we do get a lot of snow , it generally melts between major storms .It then turns every thing to mud . In my very limited knowledge of chains I figured the rings would handle the snow and slop better . This year has been a bit different . It just sits around turning to ice on the drive . If this were a prevalant condition I would have gone with V-bar chains . I rarely need to travel on the road, So either would have worked . John ....
